220. “Earth Angel” is a song first recorded by The Penguins in 1954. It was written by: Curtis Williams, Gaynel Hodge and Jesse Lorenzo Belvin. It is one of the songs that defined doo-wop. Doo-wop is a subgenre of rhythm and blues characterized by vocal harmonies. The Penguins were four black high school students. The first take of the song, which went on to sell four million copies, was recorded in one of their garages.
