45. “Please Mr. Postman” was written by Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland and Robert Bateman. “Please Mr. Postman” is the debut single by The Marvelettes for Tamla, (the original Motown label). Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music. It was the first label owned and managed by an African American, Berry Gordy. Its song writers, musician and performers were all African American.
Growing up in Detroit, the songs coming out of Motown records, were the music that accompanied me through high school. The highlight of the week was the Friday night dances. It was the practice of Motown to send out their performers to visit Detroit High Schools, where the disk jockey would put on a 45rmp record and the performers would lip-sing the song, adding little dance moves, before they moved onto the next high school.
