49. “Highwomen” was written by Amanda Rose Shires, Brandi Carlile, and Jimmy L. Webb.
“Highwomen” Is the first song on the album of the same name, by the country supergroup, The Highwomen: Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris, and Amanda Shires. The song is a tribute to women in general, and specifically to those who remain unnamed and gave their lives for others: a women who died attempting to move her children from Honduras, a gifted healer hung as a witch, a freedom rider, and a preacher. I am a feminist and someone who remains shocked that the equal rights amendment that was introduced in congress still has not passed. Like most men, our lives were shaped, not by other men, but by women. Faced with the fact that our world is a mess, plagued with wars and the destruction of the planet, and acknowledging that men have been in charge, I would very much like to see women at the helm.
