52. “Tupelo Honey” is a song by Van Morrison. The song was written for Morrison’s wife, Janet. Tupelo honey comes from the flower of the Tupelo Tree which is found in the swamps of the Southern United State. In addition to talking about the sweetness of the honey, the song references freedom, first with a reference to the Boston Tea Party, ““You can take all the tea in China ….Drop it straight into the deep blue sea”; and then to the Irish troubles that were raging at the time the song was written, “You can’t stop us on the road to freedom / You can’t stop us ’cause our eyes can see.”
