116. ”Jingo” by Santana is a variation of the song “Jin-Go-Lo-Ba” by the Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji. Santana included the song as part of their live set at Woodstock. In a Rolling Stone interview Carlos Santana talked about the performance, “When we first got there, around eleven in the morning, they told us we weren’t going on until eight. So I said, ‘Hey, I think I’ll take some psychedelics, and by the time I’m coming down, it’ll be time to go on stage and I’ll feel fine.’ But when I was peeking around two o’clock, somebody said, ‘If you don’t go right now, you’re not gonna go on.’”. Because Carlos went on stage high, he envisioned the neck of his guitar as a snake he had to control. If you’ve seen the film Woodstock, you’ll understand why he made the faces he did while performing.
