214. “Long Black Veil” was written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and first recorded by Lefty Frizzell in 1959 and later covered by Johnny Cash, The Band, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen, The Chieftains, Van Morrison among others. It is the ballad of a man accused of murder whose remains silent about his alibi because he “had been in the arms of my best friend’s wife.” The lover now mourns over his grave.
